Tent Spec Comparison
The camping tent category baseline — sleeping capacity and packed weight — together with the reason a quarter of this category’s published figures cannot be trusted at all, and what we exclude because of it.
The Category Baseline
Computed from 54 tents with published specification data.
| Specification | Coverage | P25 | Median | P75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sleeping capacity (people) | 100% | 4 | 4 | 8 |
| Packed weight (kg) | 91% | 3.04 | 5.90 | 8.48 |
The median tent is a four-person model at just under 6 kg — roughly 1.5 kg per sleeper. That is car-camping territory, and it reflects what the category sells rather than any backpacking benchmark.
The Exclusion You Should Know About
Tents have the worst data integrity of any category on this site, and the problem is structural rather than occasional.
Retailers list several sizes under one entry — a title reading “10 Person / 11 Person / 12 Person” — while the specification block carries figures for a single variant. In our data, more than half of listings state a size range, and nearly half of published capacity figures disagree with the size named in their own title.
We found tents titled as ten-person models whose capacity field read six, and eight-person tents whose recorded weight would be light for a two-person shelter. Each figure is individually plausible, which is exactly why no automated coverage or range check catches it.
What we do: multi-size listings are excluded from any per-product analysis on this site. What you should do: on any listing offering several sizes, ignore the specification block entirely and take weight and dimensions from the manufacturer’s page for the exact size you intend to buy.
Weight per Sleeper Bands
Once you have a figure you trust, dividing packed weight by sleeping capacity tells you what kind of tent you are looking at.
| Weight per sleeper | Category |
|---|---|
| Under 900 g | Genuinely lightweight backpacking shelter |
| 900 g – 1.2 kg | Good backpacking tent with usable livability |
| 1.2 – 1.8 kg | Carryable short distances; the category median sits here |
| Over 1.8 kg | Car camping |
Why No Ranked Product Table
With nearly half of capacity figures potentially describing a different size, a ranked list of tents by weight per sleeper would be a list of data errors sorted by severity — the wrongest figures produce the most impressive-looking ratios and float straight to the top.
Quartile bands survive this. A minority of bad values barely moves a median, whereas a leaderboard selects for them by construction. The same reasoning applies across the site and is set out in the methodology.
The Products These Figures Come From
Of the 54 tents in this category, 49 publish every figure in the baseline above. The 10 shown here are listed by price tier, then alphabetically — this is not a ranking, and a product appearing here means its listing is complete, nothing more. 2 listings are held back for a published figure far outside the category’s own range — a data defect rather than an unusual product.

Notes on the Products at the Edges
Most of the products above sit inside the interquartile range on every figure, which is what the baseline already describes. These are the ones it does not: each is outside P25 or P75 on at least one published figure. The position is computed from the category statistics; the explanation is what the listing itself states.
Core 9 Person Instant Cabin Tent – 14′ x 9′ — CORE, $200-500
Weight of 12.52 kg sits above the category P75 of 8.48 kg. A 14 by 9 foot instant cabin on pre-attached poles; the listing claims setup in 2 minutes and room for two queen air beds.
Wind Tour Easy Setup Breathable Mesh Tent for Backpacking &… — Wind Tour, <$30
Sleeps of 2 sits below the category P25 of 4. A 2-person backpacking tent measuring 77 by 57 by 41 inches, which is why it sits below the category’s sleeping capacity.
BISINNA 2/4 Person Camping Tent Lightweight Waterproof… — BISINNA, $30-75
Sleeps of 2 sits below the category P25 of 4. Also a backpacking tent: a 190T polyester inner in a stated 2-person, 3-season footprint.
Specifications are the manufacturer’s published values as scraped for this corpus, not our own measurements — the same source, and the same limits, as the baseline above. Prices move daily, so we show the tier rather than an amount. Links to Amazon are affiliate links.
What This Category Does Not Publish
- Hydrostatic head — waterproofing appears as a vague label rather than a millimeter rating, so tents cannot be compared on weather protection here.
- Season rating — stated on a small minority of listings, far too few for a baseline.
- Floor area and peak height — rarely published usefully, despite mattering more for livability than person count.
- Packed versus trail weight — listings often do not say which they quote, and the two can differ by several hundred grams.
Using This Page
- Backpacking: target under 1.2 kg per sleeper, and verify the weight on the manufacturer’s page.
- Car camping: the weight bands are irrelevant. Size up one person from your group and buy for headroom.
- Any multi-size listing: treat the specification block as unreliable, whatever it says.
- Comparing two tents: confirm both quote the same weight basis before comparing at all.
FAQ
How do I spot a multi-size listing?
Slashes or ranges in the title — “2/3/4 Person”, “2-4 Person” — or a size selector on the page. Any of these means the specification may not describe your chosen size.
Is 1.5 kg per sleeper good?
It is exactly average, which is fine for car camping and heavy for backpacking. Under 1.2 kg per sleeper is where carryable tents begin.
Why is the P75 capacity eight people?
Because large family cabin tents are a substantial part of this market. The category spans minimal two-person shelters and twelve-person cabins, which is why per-sleeper weight is more informative than either figure alone.
Will you publish tent rankings later?
Only if we can identify single-size listings reliably enough to rank on them. The filter matters more than the ranking.
