Camping Gear Compared by Weight Efficiency, Not Opinion
Camp Gear Data ranks camping and backpacking gear on the numbers manufacturers already publish — warmth per kilogram, liters per kilogram, lumen-hours per gram. Every figure comes from published specifications, and every page says where the number came from. We do not test gear in the field, and we never pretend otherwise.
What We Cover
Camping gear is bought one category at a time, and each category is won or lost on a different number. A sleeping bag is a warmth-to-weight problem. A backpack is a volume-to-weight problem. A lantern is a brightness-and-runtime problem where the two figures trade against each other. Comparing across those categories with one universal score would be meaningless, so we compute a category-specific ratio for each and publish the working.
Sleeping Bags
Ranked on degrees of temperature rating per kilogram carried. The single most spec-complete category we track, and the one where the published number needs the most caveats.
Hiking Backpacks
Ranked on liters of capacity per kilogram of empty pack — the clearest measure of whether a pack earns the weight it adds to your load.
Camping Tents
Ranked on packed weight per sleeper, which separates genuine backpacking shelters from car-camping tents sold with a person count attached.
Camping Lanterns
Ranked on lumen-hours per gram — total light delivered over a charge, divided by what you carry. Nobody publishes this figure, so we compute it.
Camping Stoves
Ranked on BTU per kilogram, read alongside fuel type. Output alone favors heavy stoves; the ratio shows what you actually gain per gram.
Camping Chairs
Ranked on supported load per kilogram carried. The one category where the headline spec — weight capacity — is published almost universally.
Camping Coolers
Capacity per kilogram, with an important limitation: ice retention is not published anywhere, and stated capacity is not measured on a consistent basis.
Sleeping Pads
The category we cannot rank. R-value is the number that matters and it appears on roughly one listing in five. We explain why, rather than inventing a substitute.
How the Numbers Are Produced
We collect published specifications for the products actually selling in each category, normalize them into comparable units, and compute a per-category baseline — the median, the quartiles, and the spread. Individual products are then read against that baseline rather than against marketing copy.
Two rules govern everything on this site. The first is that a number is only published when enough products in its category carry it to make a comparison meaningful; a specification present on a fifth of a category cannot support an average, and we withhold it rather than average four listings and call it a benchmark. The second is that every number is labeled with where it came from — a structured manufacturer specification field, or marketing copy in the product description. Those two sources are not equally reliable, and blending them silently would make the whole exercise worthless.
Ratios, not prices. We publish ratios and relative positioning rather than exact prices. Prices change weekly and any figure we printed would be wrong within days. Where cost matters to a decision, we describe it in tiers.
What This Site Is Not
We do not test gear. Nobody here has taken these sleeping bags to altitude, run the stoves in wind, or left the lanterns on overnight to see what really happens at hour twelve. Sites that do that work are valuable and this is not one of them.
What we can do is something field reviewers generally cannot: read every listing in a category at once and tell you how one product sits against the whole distribution. A reviewer who has tested nine bags can tell you how those nine feel. We can tell you that a bag’s stated rating sits in the coldest quarter of its category while its weight sits in the heaviest third — and then tell you exactly how much confidence that stated rating deserves.

Common Questions
Do you test any of this gear?
No. Every figure on this site comes from published manufacturer specifications. We say so on every page because a comparison built from spec sheets is a genuinely different thing from a field review, and readers deserve to know which one they are reading.
Why rank on ratios instead of just listing the best products?
Because “best” depends on what you are carrying it for. A ratio is a stated, checkable rule — degrees per kilogram, liters per kilogram — that you can disagree with openly. A ranked list with no published rule is just an opinion with numbers attached to it.
Why are some categories missing a ranking?
Because the number that matters is not published often enough to compare. Sleeping pads are the clearest case: R-value is the whole point of a pad, and it appears on a small minority of listings. We could rank pads on weight and thickness instead, but that would be ranking them on the wrong thing.
Are the specifications you use reliable?
Partly, and we are specific about where they are not. Manufacturer figures are self-reported, measured inconsistently between brands, and on multi-size listings the published specification sometimes describes a different variant than the product title. All three problems are documented in the methodology.
How often is this updated?
Category baselines are recomputed when we refresh the underlying specification data, and each page carries the date it was last updated. A baseline is a snapshot of what is on sale now, not a permanent fact.
