Chair Spec Comparison
The camping chair category baseline — supported load and chair weight. This is the best-documented category on the site, and worth reading as a demonstration of what these comparisons look like when the underlying data is actually good.
The Category Baseline
Computed from 60 chairs with published specification data.
| Specification | Coverage | P25 | Median | P75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum supported load (kg) | 95% | 136 | 150 | 204 |
| Chair weight (kg) | 90% | 3.18 | 4.74 | 6.17 |
Maximum weight capacity is published on virtually every listing, in a structured manufacturer specification field rather than marketing copy. That is the strongest coverage of any headline figure we track — compare it with stove BTU at 50% from marketing text.
Why this matters. Confidence in a comparison should vary with the quality of the data behind it, and on this site it does. The chair figures rest on near-complete, structured, manufacturer-declared data. The stove figures do not. Both are published; they do not deserve equal trust.
How to Place a Chair
- Under 3.18 kg puts a chair in the lightest quarter — typically a packable aluminum-frame design.
- Over 6.17 kg is the heaviest quarter: padded, oversized or steel-framed chairs built for comfort rather than carrying.
- Around 150 kg supported at 4.7 kg is the exact center of the category — a standard folding camp chair.
- Supported load above 204 kg is the top quarter, generally heavy-duty steel-framed chairs.
Capacity Is a Safety Limit
A stated 150 kg capacity does not mean the chair is pleasant to sit in at 145 kg. Rated limits are static maximums, while real use involves leaning back, dropping into the seat and uneven ground. Leaving meaningful headroom above your actual weight is sensible, and it usually means accepting a heavier chair.
This is a case where the efficiency ratio and the sensible purchase point in opposite directions, and the ratio should lose.
Why No Ranked Table
Even here, ranking individual chairs by supported load per kilogram broke down. The top of the list was occupied by listings with implausible weights — chairs recorded at a few grams — producing ratios in the tens of thousands. Those are specification errors that a leaderboard promotes precisely because it sorts for extremes.
Below those errors the ranking looked sensible, with genuine ultralight packable chairs at the top, which suggests this category could support a product table once weight-plausibility filtering is reliable. It is the most likely candidate on the site to get one first. Until then, quartiles are what we can stand behind — see the methodology.
What the Specifications Miss
- Seat height — low chairs are lighter and harder to get out of. Rarely published usefully.
- Padding and back support — pure weight in the ratio, and the main reason people buy a chair.
- Foot design — narrow feet sink into sand and soft ground regardless of rated capacity.
- Setup — packable chairs assemble from poles; folding chairs open in one motion.
Using This Page
- Carrying it: aim for the lightest quarter, under 3.18 kg, and expect to give up seat height and padding.
- Car camping: ignore weight. The heaviest quarter contains the most comfortable chairs, and a 7 kg chair that travels ten meters costs you nothing.
- Near the capacity limit: prioritise headroom over efficiency and accept the heavier steel-framed chair.
- Festivals: comfort plus packability, which is a different trade from either extreme.
The Products These Figures Come From
Of the 60 chairs in this category, 51 publish every figure in the baseline above. The 10 shown here are listed by price tier, then alphabetically — this is not a ranking, and a product appearing here means its listing is complete, nothing more. 10 listings are held back for a published figure far outside the category’s own range — a data defect rather than an unusual product.

Notes on the Products at the Edges
Most of the products above sit inside the interquartile range on every figure, which is what the baseline already describes. These are the ones it does not: each is outside P25 or P75 on at least one published figure. The position is computed from the category statistics; the explanation is what the listing itself states.
ARROWHEAD OUTDOOR Portable Folding Double Duo Camping Chair… — ARROWHEAD OUTDOOR, $30-75
Max load of 295 kg sits above the category P75 of 204 kg. A two-seat loveseat chair rather than a single seat, which is what puts its load rating at the top of the category.
EMERIT Oversized Fully Padded Camping Chair — EMERIT, $75-200
Max load of 295 kg sits above the category P75 of 204 kg. Also a two-seat design: the listing states a 650lb capacity and a 57.5 inch seat width.
Wind Tour Portable Camping Chair Foldable Outdoor Chair for… — Wind Tour, <$30
Weight of 1.32 kg sits below the category P25 of 3.18 kg. A compact folding chair in Oxford fabric on steel tube with a carry bag and shoulder strap — a packable seat rather than a camp lounger.
Specifications are the manufacturer’s published values as scraped for this corpus, not our own measurements — the same source, and the same limits, as the baseline above. Prices move daily, so we show the tier rather than an amount. Links to Amazon are affiliate links.
FAQ
Why is coverage so much better here than elsewhere?
Because retailers expose a maximum weight recommendation field that manufacturers reliably complete for seating. Most categories have no equivalently well-populated field for their key figure.
Is a higher capacity chair better?
Not inherently. Higher capacity usually means more material and more weight. What matters is adequate headroom above your own weight, not the largest number available.
How much lighter can a packable chair be?
The lightest quarter starts below 3.18 kg, and genuine ultralight designs sit far below that while still supporting well over 100 kg. Tensioned fabric on an aluminum frame carries load very efficiently.
Will chairs get a ranked table before other categories?
Most likely, yes. Its data is the cleanest we hold, and the only obstacle is filtering a small number of implausible weight values.
