Camping Lanterns
Lanterns are ranked here on lumen-hours per gram — total light delivered over a charge, divided by what you carry to get it. No manufacturer publishes this figure, which is precisely why it is worth computing.

Lantern Spec Comparison
Lanterns ranked on lumen-hours per gram, with brightness, runtime and weight shown separately so you can weigh the trade yourself.
Brightness Against Runtime
Why a lantern’s headline lumen figure and its headline runtime almost never apply at the same time, and how to read the two together.
The Ranking Rule
Lanterns are ordered by stated brightness multiplied by stated runtime, divided by weight in grams. A 500 lumen lantern running 20 hours at 400 g scores 25 lumen-hours per gram.
Brightness alone rewards large lanterns with large batteries. Runtime alone rewards dim ones. Multiplying them gives total light delivered per charge, and dividing by weight asks the question that matters when you carry it: how much light does this thing produce for what it costs you to bring?
This is the most derived metric on the site, and it inherits the weaknesses of both inputs. Read the next section before relying on it.
The headline figures are not simultaneous. The quoted brightness is almost always the highest setting; the quoted runtime is almost always the lowest. A lantern advertised at 1000 lumens and 100 hours does not do both at once — often not within an order of magnitude. Lumen-hours per gram is therefore a comparative index, not a promise of output.
What the Category Looks Like
The median lantern in our data produces around 540 lumens, runs for about 16 hours, and weighs roughly 0.41 kg. Brightness is stated on a little over half the listings and runtime on about six in ten — the lowest coverage of any category we rank, which is why the comparison set is smaller than the category itself.
Provenance here is mixed and worth knowing. Runtime is usually published in a structured specification field. Brightness, in every case we found, came from marketing copy — the product title or a feature bullet — rather than a specification field. That makes the brightness half of this ratio the weaker half.
A Naming Collision Worth Knowing
At least one major manufacturer abbreviates lumens as “L” in its product names: a “1000L Deluxe Propane Lantern” is a 1000 lumen lantern, not a 1000 liter anything. This collides directly with the liter abbreviation used for pack and cooler capacity.
We mention it because it is a good illustration of why numbers on retail listings cannot be read mechanically, and because it caused a real error in an early version of our data — lanterns briefly acquired a phantom capacity figure before the collision was caught.
Fuel and Power Source
Power source is one of the better-documented attributes here, stated on the large majority of listings, and it changes what the ranking means:
- Rechargeable LED. The mainstream choice. Runtime figures are usually honest at low output, and many double as power banks.
- Replaceable battery LED. Slightly heavier in use once you count spare cells, but recovers instantly in the field and does not need a charging plan.
- Propane and liquid fuel. Very bright, produce heat as well as light, and the weight ranking treats them harshly because canister weight is not in the stated figure. For car camping that is irrelevant; for carrying, it matters a great deal. They must never be used inside a tent — burning fuel produces carbon monoxide, which is odorless and gives no warning before it affects you.
Because fuel weight is excluded from published product weight, fuel-burning lanterns score better on lumen-hours per gram than they deserve. Compare within a power type rather than across.
What the Ratio Misses
- Light quality. Color temperature, diffusion and glare are not published. A lantern producing even, warm light at 300 lumens can be far more usable than a harsh 600 lumen one.
- Usable output levels. Most camping happens on a low or medium setting. How much light is available at the setting you will actually use is rarely stated.
- Water resistance. Published as a broad label rather than a rating, though it is stated on most listings.
- Charging time and pass-through. Almost never published.
Which Should You Choose?
- Backpacking: lumen-hours per gram is genuinely decisive. Compare only rechargeable and battery models, and be skeptical of the brightness figure.
- Car camping: weight barely matters. Buy for light quality, a usable low setting and a long runtime at that setting.
- Power outages at home: ignore the ranking and prioritise long runtime at low output, plus replaceable batteries so it works after weeks in a cupboard.
- Group camping: two moderate lanterns usually beat one bright one, since diffuse light from two points is more useful than glare from one.
Related Categories
- Camping Tents — ranked on weight per sleeper; a lantern’s useful brightness depends partly on the space it lights.

Common Questions
How many lumens do I actually need?
Less than the marketing implies. Around 100–200 lumens lights a tent interior comfortably; 300–500 is ample for a table or cooking area. Peak figures above that are mostly used for short bursts, not for sitting under.
Can a lantern really run for 100 hours?
On its lowest setting, sometimes — which may be very dim indeed. Quoted runtime and quoted brightness are almost never the same mode. Assume the two headline numbers describe opposite ends of the dial.
Why do fuel lanterns rank so well?
Because published product weight excludes the fuel. That flatters them on a per-gram measure. Compare fuel lanterns against each other, not against rechargeable models.
Why is brightness the weakest figure here?
Because it comes from marketing copy rather than a structured specification field in every case we found, and because it describes peak output. It is the least reliable input to any ratio on this site.
Are headlamps included?
Some appear in the underlying data, but the ranking is built for area lighting. A headlamp and a lantern solve different problems, and comparing them on the same ratio would be misleading.
