Camping Tents

Tents are ranked here on packed weight per sleeper — the measure that separates a genuine backpacking shelter from a car-camping tent with a person count on the box. It is also the category where manufacturer data is least trustworthy, and that caveat is not a footnote.

Tent Spec Comparison

Tents ranked on kilograms per sleeper against the category baseline, restricted to single-size listings so the published figures describe the tent being named.

Reading Tent Capacity Honestly

Why a “4 person” tent rarely sleeps four adults comfortably, how to convert a person rating into a realistic number, and what to check instead.

The Ranking Rule

Tents are ordered by packed weight divided by stated person capacity. A 2.4 kg two-person tent and a 4.8 kg four-person tent both score 1.2 kg per sleeper.

Per-sleeper weight is the figure that decides whether a tent is carryable. Total weight alone punishes large tents unfairly; person count alone tells you nothing about carrying it. The ratio is only meaningful if the person count is honest, which brings us to the problem with this category.

The Data Problem You Need to Know About

Retailers frequently list several sizes of the same tent under one entry — a title reading “10 Person / 11 Person / 12 Person” — while the structured specification carries only one variant’s figures. The published capacity is real and structured, and it describes a different tent than the one named.

In our tent data, more than half of listings state a size range, and nearly half of published capacity figures disagree with their own product title. That is by far the highest rate of any category we track. Backpacks, where capacity comes from the product name itself, are effectively unaffected.

No coverage check catches this, because every individual value looks entirely plausible. Our response is to exclude multi-size listings from the comparison page rather than rank tents on figures that may describe a different product. It costs us a substantial share of the category and it is the only defensible option.

What this means when you shop. On any listing offering several sizes, do not trust the specification block. Check the weight and dimensions on the manufacturer’s own page for the exact size you intend to buy.

What the Category Looks Like

The median tent in our data is a four-person model at just under 6 kg packed — about 1.5 kg per sleeper. That is firmly car-camping territory. Genuine backpacking tents cluster well under 1.5 kg per sleeper, and the lightest fall under 700 g per sleeper.

The distribution is wide because two different products share one category. Large cabin tents with standing headroom and room dividers sit alongside minimal two-person shelters, and no single ranking serves both audiences equally. Use the per-sleeper figure to identify which group a tent belongs to before comparing within it.

Person Ratings Are Not Comfort Ratings

A tent’s person rating describes how many sleeping mats fit edge to edge on the floor, with no allowance for gear, movement, or anyone who dislikes touching the person beside them.

The practical convention among experienced campers is to subtract one: a three-person tent is comfortable for two adults with their packs inside, a four-person tent suits three. If you are car camping and weight is irrelevant, sizing up is close to free and almost always worth it. If you are carrying the tent, that decision costs real weight and deserves more thought.

What the Specifications Do Not Tell You

  • Waterproofing. Published as a vague resistance label rather than a hydrostatic head figure in millimeters, so tents cannot be compared on it here.
  • Season rating. Stated on a small minority of listings — too few to support a comparison, so it is excluded from the ranking.
  • Floor area and peak height. Rarely published as usable figures, though they determine livability more than person count does.
  • Pitching. Whether a tent goes up quickly in wind, alone, in the dark, is not a specification and never will be.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Backpacking: per-sleeper weight is the deciding figure. Under 1.2 kg per sleeper is good; under 900 g is genuinely light.
  • Car camping: largely ignore the ranking. Buy for headroom, floor space and ease of pitching, and size up one person from your group.
  • Mixed use: a three-person tent at moderate per-sleeper weight is the usual compromise — carryable for two, comfortable for two with gear.
  • Any multi-size listing: verify the specification against the manufacturer’s page before buying, whatever the ranking says.

Related Categories

  • Sleeping Bags — ranked on warmth per kilogram, the other major overnight weight.
  • Sleeping Pads — what determines whether you sleep warm on the ground, and the category we cannot rank.
  • Hiking Backpacks — ranked on liters per kilogram; the tent usually sets the minimum pack volume you need.

Common Questions

Does a 4 person tent really sleep four?

Four sleeping mats fit on the floor. Four adults with gear, over several nights, generally do not enjoy it. Subtracting one from the stated capacity is the reliable rule.

Why do you exclude some tents from the comparison?

Because their listings cover several sizes under one entry, and the published specification may describe a size other than the one in the title. Ranking on figures that might belong to a different tent would be worse than leaving them out.

What is a good weight per sleeper?

For backpacking, under 1.2 kg per sleeper is good and under 900 g is light. For car camping the figure is close to irrelevant — the category median of roughly 1.5 kg per sleeper is perfectly fine when the tent travels in a trunk.

Why not rank tents on waterproof rating?

Because retail listings publish a vague resistance label rather than a hydrostatic head figure. There is nothing numeric to compare, so we do not pretend there is.

Are lighter tents less durable?

Usually, yes — lighter fabrics and thinner poles are how the weight comes down. It is a legitimate trade for people who need the weight saving, and a poor one for a tent that lives in a car.

Compare them

The finder below is already scoped to this class — 54 of the 429 items in the corpus. Widen or narrow it from there, or open the full camp gear finder to search everything at once. Every result is placed against the median for its own size band, where that band holds at least eight products with a stated figure.

Your requirements

What are you shopping for?

Weight only means something within a category — a 2 kg tent and a 2 kg cooler are not the same kind of heavy — so the class medians below are always computed inside one.

How much weight are you willing to carry?

Weight is what this site exists to compare, and the one figure the category publishes almost everywhere — 379 of 429 items state it. What it buys you differs by category, which is why the comparison is always against the class.

What can you spend?

How much weather will it see?

Stated on 96% of the tents and 87% of the lanterns. The distinction worth having is between a coating that sheds a shower and a rating that survives a night of sustained rain.

What does it run on?

Fuel decides resupply as much as performance. Propane bottles are in every hardware store, isobutane canisters are a specialist buy you cannot fly with, and a battery lantern needs no fuel at all.
