Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 17, 2026
This policy explains what information Camp Gear Data collects when you visit, why it is collected, who else receives it, and what control you have over it. It is written to be read rather than to satisfy a checklist.
1. Who We Are
Camp Gear Data publishes comparisons of camping and backpacking gear built from published manufacturer specifications. The site is reachable at campgeardata.com and by email at editorial@campgeardata.com.
2. What We Collect
Information you give us
The only information you actively provide is what you send by email. If you contact us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it to reply and to correct errors you report. We do not add correspondents to a mailing list.
Information collected automatically
Like effectively every website, our hosting infrastructure records standard technical data when a page is served: IP address, browser type and version, device and operating system, the page requested, the referring page, and the date and time. This is used to keep the site running, diagnose faults, and understand which pages are read.
Analytics
We use aggregate analytics to see which pages are visited and how readers move between them. This informs what we write next — a category that readers consistently reach and leave quickly usually means the page failed to answer their question. We are interested in patterns across readers, not in identifying individuals, and we do not attempt to build profiles of named people.
3. Cookies
Cookies are small files a site stores in your browser. On this site they fall into three groups:
- Essential cookies — required for the site to function and to remember preferences such as a dismissed notice.
- Analytics cookies — used to count visits and understand navigation patterns in aggregate.
- Affiliate cookies — set by retailers, not by us, when you follow an outbound link to a shop. These record that you arrived from this site so any resulting purchase is attributed here. They are the mechanism by which the site earns, and they are explained further in the affiliate disclosure.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking analytics and affiliate cookies does not prevent you reading anything here; every page remains fully available.
4. Third Parties That Receive Data
We do not sell your personal information. Data reaches third parties only in these ways:
- Our hosting provider, which necessarily processes requests in order to serve pages.
- Our analytics provider, which receives aggregate usage data.
- Retailers you choose to visit via an outbound link. Once you follow a link to a retailer, you are on their site and their privacy policy governs what happens next — including the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, of which this site is a participant.
We have no control over, and take no responsibility for, the privacy practices of any site we link to. If you are concerned about a particular retailer’s data handling, read their policy before browsing or buying.
5. How Long Data Is Kept
Server logs are retained for a limited operational period and then discarded. Aggregate analytics data is retained in summary form. Email correspondence is kept as long as needed to handle the matter it concerns, and longer only where a correction record is useful.
6. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to certain processing, or request a copy in portable form. Readers in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom have these rights under the GDPR; California residents have comparable rights under the CCPA, including the right not to be discriminated against for exercising them.
To exercise any of these, email editorial@campgeardata.com. In practice we hold very little that identifies you personally — typically nothing beyond correspondence you initiated — so most requests are quick to resolve.
7. Children
This site is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Security
The site is served over HTTPS, so traffic between your browser and our server is encrypted in transit. No site can promise perfect security, and we would rather say that plainly than offer an assurance nobody can honour. Because we hold almost no personal data, the practical consequences of a compromise here are limited.
9. Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes materially, the updated version will be posted here with a revised date at the top. Continued use of the site after a change indicates acceptance of the revised policy.
FAQ
Do you sell my data?
No. We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information.
Do I have to accept cookies to read the site?
No. You can block analytics and affiliate cookies and every page remains fully readable. Blocking affiliate cookies means a purchase you make will not be attributed to this site, which costs us commission and costs you nothing.
What happens when I click a link to a retailer?
You leave this site and arrive on theirs, and their privacy policy applies from that point. Typically a cookie is set recording the referral. See the disclosure page for how that works commercially.
How do I ask what data you hold on me?
Email editorial@campgeardata.com. If you have never contacted us, the answer is almost certainly nothing beyond anonymous aggregate analytics.
